Bettendorf Middle Parent Link

Parent Link was started in the fall of 1994 by a group of dedicated parents.  As stated in our Charter, updated in Oct of 2009, the purpose of Parent Link is to support the education of children at BMS by fostering relationships among parents and teachers.

Our objective is to promote a cooperative relationship between teachers, staff, parents and students in providing the best physical, mental and social being for BMS and the community and to coordinate volunteers to assist in school activities.

Monthly Meeting Information
Each month Parent Link meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month beginning in August and ending in March.  The meetings are located in the Media Center (Library), which is located in the back half of the A Hallway.  In order to accommodate more parents we are attempting to hold both daytime and evening meetings this year on alternating months.    Morning meetings are held at 9am and evening meetings are held at 7pm.   For 2010-2011 the evening meetings are November, January and March.

Fall Festival
Fall Festival is held in late August or early September.  Families are invited to come along with their student (though most students do come in groups without their families).  Tickets are sold for events such as the pop toss, dunk tank (they get to dunk faculty/staff and student council officers), inflatables, cake walk, hair and face painting, and many other “carnival game” type events.  Concessions are available for purchase with cash.

Popcorn Fridays
Every Friday from September thru April Parent Link volunteers pop popcorn and sell it for $.50 a bag after school.  All monies earned go the Needy Student Fund.

13poster16.jpgBook Clubs
Parent Link volunteers and our school librarian facilitate book clubs for each grade level at BMS.  Each club has a maximum of 12 students.  Spaces are filled on a first come first served basis and additional volunteers are always welcome!  Each quarter brings a new book and the opportunity for a new group of students to sign up.  Clubs meet during their grades lunch period weekly.

Dances
3 times yearly Parent Link hosts a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade dance.  The DJ for 2010-2011 is Kevin Walker with Walker Productions, who can also be heard on B100.  Dance attire is VERY informal – though students must follow regular school dress code guidelines.  Dance admission is $3.00 and concessions are sold during the dances in the cafeteria.  A minimum of 35 chaperones are needed for the dance to be held so please consider volunteering to help us out!

March Madness
Each year BMS holds a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for middle school students.  Both boys and girls teams participate and students form their own teams.   Competition is held within each grade level.  Games are played at Bettendorf High School and are refereed and scored by the BHS Basketball team.  Parent Link sells concessions and all monies raised go directly to the Bettendorf Middle School Athletic Fund.

Book Fair
Held during Fall Conferences, all monies earned during the Scholastic Book Fair are given directly to the Librarian at BMS for additional book purchases.

Food Drive
Held annually, the BMS food drive donates food directly to the Bettendorf Food Pantry.  The donations from BMS help to stock the pantry shelves until late spring.  Some suggestions for donations are canned vegetables (other than corn or green beans which are always in good supply,) canned fruit, canned tuna, chicken or Spam and frozen turkeys, 10 pounds or less. Cereal, macaroni and cheese, baby food, soup and Jell-O are other suggestions. Paper goods such as paper towels and toilet paper are welcome as well as shampoo, conditioner and bar soap. The small shampoos, soaps etc. that you might bring back from a motel stay are useful. Checks, made out to BMS, are also appreciated by the Pantry.
